(Clinical Presentation)
Dengue fever remains a critical public health challenge, particularly in tropical regions. Caused by the Dengue virus and transmitted via Aedes mosquitoes, the disease requires prompt recognition and clinical vigilance.
Clinical Presentation The clinical course typically begins with sudden onset high fever, accompanied by severe headache, retro-orbital pain, myalgia, and arthralgia. As the disease transitions into the critical phase—often coinciding with defervescence—clinicians must watch for plasma leakage. This can lead to hemoconcentration, hypotension, and circulatory collapse. Thrombocytopenia is frequently observed, increasing the risk of mucosal bleeding, such as epistaxis, gingival bleeding, or gastrointestinal hemorrhage.
Severity and Clinical Management The danger of dengue lies in its potential to rapidly progress to Dengue Shock Syndrome (DSS). Without timely clinical intervention, such as appropriate fluid resuscitation, patients may suffer from multi-organ failure, leading to high mortality rates. Recognizing warning signs—such as severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, or altered mental status—is imperative for preventing poor outcomes.
The Role of Vaccination in Disease Control Vaccination has emerged as a cornerstone in dengue prevention. Clinical data consistently demonstrate that vaccination serves as a powerful tool to:
- Reduce Disease Severity: Significantly lowers the risk of severe dengue that necessitates hospitalization.
- Lower Mortality Rates: Provides robust protection against life-threatening complications.
